Development/Hackable Platforms
Nanode

Nanode is an open source Arduino-like board that has in-built web connectivity. It connects to a range of wireless, wired and ethernet interfaces.
It allows you to develop web based sensor and control systems - giving you web access to six analogue sensor lines and six digital I/O lines.
It costs under £20 as an easy build it yourself kit. Nanode was designed with Hacking in mind.
Home Automation Hub

The Home Automation Hub (HAH) is a WiFi router that has been re-purposed as a flexible Home Automation (HA) controller.
It can be purchased as a read-to-assemble kit for £42.

mBed microcontroller

The mbed Microcontroller is made for prototyping, and comes in a 40-pin 0.1" pitch DIP form-factor so it's ideal for experimenting on breadboard, stripboard and PCBs. It supports lots of interfaces, so you can connect it to all sorts of input and output circuits and modules.

ASUS WL-500G router with OpenWrt & Current Cost
Simple perl script can be used to feed pachube with average power and temperature readings from CurrentCost Envi (CC128) which is connected with ASUS WL-500G router. No CurrentCost data cable necessary for this setup but some soldering is required.
